Felt Castle Play Mat

Last week I posted a really fun portable Noah's Ark in a wine tote. I made everything out of felt and it turned out to be pretty cute, I really love open ended toys. This week I made a second felt toy, a castle.

Instead of using a cardboard wine tote I bought a cardboard mailing tube and covered it with felt. Then I cut out lots and lots of castle shapes from dark and light gray felt. I cut squares and rectangles, doorways, parapets, triangles and then we made some cute people and a dragon. This was such a fun way to use up odd felt pieces!  I also made a shield and some flags. You could make way more accessories for your castle like more people, plants and trees, pets, etc.

The mat is lavender felt on one side and blue velour on the other, so it is reversible.
My kids loved making castles with the pieces and to tell you the truth, I think it is pretty fun also!

  1. I love this. How cute! My son is getting into castles and knights because of the "Mike the Knight" cartoon. Would you happen to have a tutorial for this that you would be willing to share? I would love to make something similar for my son's quiet book. :) Thanks for posting this! :)

  2. So we do not have a tutorial specifically to re-create our castle, we were going with the idea, of using up scraps of fabric, and letting them determine the shapes. But we kept to pretty basic geometric shapes for this, square and rectangles for castle, circles for heads, tri-angle bodies. If you start with that, you may just come up with some really beautiful creations all your own, you can't go wrong. Thanks so much for your comment, let us know how it works out!

  3. This is great. I love to see felt ideas for boys too, as so many seem to be geared to girls. Well done!
